AK CASC Tribal Resilience Liaison

The Assistant Tribal Climate Resilience Liaison (Asst. TCRL) for the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center (AK CASC) serves as support on Alaska Tribal climate adaptation science needs under the guidance and direction of the Senior Tribal Climate Resilience Liaison (Sr. TCRL) of the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society (NAFWS). The Asst. TCRL is responsible for working with the Sr. TCRL to provide technical assistance and to work with tribal communities across Alaska to improve their capacity to prepare for and respond to climate-related environmental impacts. Duties include but are not limited to outreach and extension programming on tribal climate impacts, concerns and adaptation strategies; support efforts to enhance information exchange; assist communities to identify and prioritize resilience and adaptation projects; and work with another Asst. TCRL and a seasonal Alaska Native Student Intern.

The position is open to applicants in Juneau, Anchorage, or Fairbanks with remote work possible under the approval of the NAFWS Executive Director.

We seek an enthusiastic applicant with a Ph.D. in the social sciences, who is interested in doing meaningful work on climate change adaptation in a collaborative environment. Potential research projects include the evaluation of organizational approaches to science communication, boundary spanners and actionable science, research-practice partnerships, or relationships between team composition, budgetary inputs, and actionable science outcomes. This is a 2-year position based in Fairbanks, Alaska with a competitive salary based on experience. 

Science Communicator position

The AK CASC is hiring to expand our Science Communication team! As a Science Communicator at the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center we’re seeking someone to play a vital role in ensuring that climate science actively contributes to Alaskans efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change. The new science communicator will work with teams of researchers, coordinators, technicians, community partners, and other communications professionals to interpret scientific findings and creatively tell compelling and interesting stories about climate change for a variety of audiences.

Candidates should be excited to tell engaging stories about climate change science and adaptation efforts for both internal and external audiences. Tasks may include writing feature articles and project profiles and crafting stories for print, websites, and social media. Attention to detail is critical. Candidates with skills in other communications realms including graphic design, video, and photography should highlight those skills as well in their application.

If selected from the pool of applicants applying to the Science Communicator Position successful candidates may work alongside our researchers at UAS in Juneau, at UAA and the USGS in Anchorage, or at UAF in Fairbanks. If selected from the pool of applicants applying to the Science Writer & Content Creator position the successful candidate will be located at UAF in Fairbanks.

Communicating Science Intern (2 Positions)

You’ll work with USGS scientists and AK CASC science communicators, travel and assist with research, and gain hands-on training and experience translating scientific concepts for diverse audiences. Dates: 10 June – 9 August 2024 (10 weeks), $16.15/hour, and includes housing in Fairbanks, Alaska. Open to upper-level undergrads or recent grads of any major. Apply by 21 April 2024. 

Climate Adaptation Catalyst position

The AK CASC is working alongside the non-profit Northern Latitudes Partnership to hire a Climate Adaptation Catalyst to work with the Northwest Boreal Partnership – a unique trans-boundary partnership dedicated to making climate science and Indigenous knowledge actionable for communities and agencies. The partnership includes Indigenous organizations and communities, government agencies, universities, and non-profits across the northwest boreal forest in Alaska and northwest Canada.

Candidates should be comfortable communicating and translating knowledge, concerns, and research needs among partners and have a background in a physical science discipline applicable to the work or with Indigenous or traditional knowledge systems. You must also be comfortable organizing and traveling to in-person and virtual gatherings in rural communities and hubs in Alaska and Canada.
