Knowledge You Can Touch: Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center Brings Learning to Life at the Arctic Research Open House
This month, the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center took part in the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Arctic Research Open House, an event that draws hundreds of Fairbanks residents to the Troth Yeddha’ campus for a day of learning and science engagement. Researchers from across the university, including a number of AK CASC researchers, showed up to share their work through engaging activities.
The Research to Action for Yukon River Salmon team helped visitors identify aquatic invertebrates, an important food-source for local salmon fisheries. The Fresh Eyes on Ice team led a traditional Japanese fish printing activity called Gyotaku, and the Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning showed how data become maps through a hands-on map-making activity.
This year, the AK CASC also set up the Alaska Voices Storytelling Tent in a 12-foot-tall, bright yellow Arctic Oven. Arctic Ovens are often used by researchers in remote field sites and freezing temperatures, but the AK CASC team set it up in the lobby of the Akasofu Building. Visitors could escape the bustle and listen to episodes of the Alaska Voices podcast, which tells the human story behind the science. They could also try their hand at being a podcast guest by telling their own Alaska stories with our recording equipment.
Thank you to everyone who showed up to participate in the Arctic Research Open House! We already can’t wait for next year.
