Creating Resilience through Harvest to Home and the Alaska Lumber Grading Program

In this session, The Kuskokwim Corporation highlighted its Harvest to Home (H2H) holistic housing project that aims to construct affordable and energy efficient housing using local timber resources that are sustainably harvested and milled in their region. The option to build in compliance with building codes using locally harvested lumber has recently become a reality with the Alaska Lumber Grading Program. This program provides training and certification to enable Alaskans to use dimension lumber from local timber resources in home construction. Presenters shared how the H2H project intends to meet workforce and economic development goals by training shareholders, and using locally certified lumber to keep costs down, access available forest resources and build much-needed area homes.
