AK CASC supported training helps scientists engage with the media

When you think of being interviewed by the media do you want to run and hide?

On June 21, 2019, thirteen scientists with the AK CASC and International Arctic Research Center (IARC) learned that much of the angst associated with media interviews can be overcome by framing their research for broad audiences and practicing the delivery of a clear, concise message.

The AK CASC sponsored media training included tips and tools from Ravenna Koenig, a reporter with Alaska’s Energy Desk; Dave Snider, Alaska Weather TV Program Leader; Brian Brettschneider, a climate scientist with IARC; and Rick Thoman, an Alaska Climate Specialist with the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy.

Participants were able to immediately put their new skills to work in mock interview exercises. These skills will prepare them for engaging with the media more effectively, and ultimately improve how they communicate their science to broad audiences.
